If you want to enjoy a holiday in the snow without skiing in the Montafon mountains, you can also go hiking in Schruns and its surrounds in winter. There are 150 km of trails for snowshoe hikers in Vorarlberg. For winter hiking without such "bear paws" there are 290 km of prepared hiking trails to choose from.
Snowshoeing in the deep snow of the Alps
After about nine minutes by car, you reach the starting point for the snowshoe hike from Latschau to Grabs and back. The 6.2 km-long route of medium difficulty is designed to take about 3 hrs. Snowshoes can be hired at Intersport in the centre of Schruns

Snowshoe hiking with a view can be enjoyed on the Sonnenbalkon Bartholomäberg. Only a 12-minute drive from Hotel Zimba. This easy snowshoe hike starts and finishes at the Fernblick holiday hotel, 1,110 m above sea level. The route leads via Chrestlis Egg and Sassälla to Barthold Rank. For 6.8 km you should plan 2 hrs 30 mins
From the Golmerbahn valley station, an easy 3 hour snowshoe hike goes from Vandans via Lendi to Mularientsch. During the 8.2 km-long route, you climb from 650 m to 1,050 m. The car park of the valley station is about 10 minutes by car from Hotel Zimba
Winter hiking in the Montafon valley
The Schruns loop hike at 3.7 km is ideal for getting to know the surroundings of the Hotel Zimba in the Montafon valley. The easy tour takes about 1:15 hrs and starts at the church square in the centre of the village.
The 14 km long winter hike from Latschau through the Gauertal valley to the Lindauer chalet starts at the fire station in Latschau, about 11 minutes from the hotel. After a short ascent, you can choose to go straight ahead along the Volsporaweg trail, or take the right fork into the Gauertalweg trail. After about 45 minutes, the paths merge again. The estimated duration for the entire route is4 hrs 30 mins. Since the return is mainly downhill, this time can easily be shortened by using a sleigh.
About 10 minutes by car from our house is the Bartholomäberg parish church. It's one of the most beautiful baroque churches in Vorarlberg – this is where the moderately difficult winter hike via Rellseck to Fritzensee begins. The route is 10.8 km long and takes about 3 hrs & 40 mins. The highest point of the hike is at an altitude of 1,500 m and offers a great panoramic view
